Homemade Soft Scrub

Soft scrubs are great at scouring off grime, but they often use harmful chemicals to do it. This homemade soft scrub recipe is effective, all natural, and inexpensive to make.

Spring Cleaning Week continues with a crazily simple recipe for making homemade soft scrub. You guys, seriously. It only uses 2-3 ingredients and does a great job scrubbing away stuck-on ickiness.

Store bought soft scrubs are often bad news. They contain toxic ingredients like formaldehyde and benzene, and the worst part is that companies don’t have to disclose many of those hormone disruptors, allergens, and carcinogens on the product label.

Instead of buying toxic soft scrubs full of mystery ingredients, save some money and give yourself peace of mind with this homemade soft scrub recipe!

A note about this recipe: Baking soda is very abrasive, so I highly recommend testing your scrub on a small, discreet area of your tub, tile, or counter before using it on the whole thing. It works fine on most surfaces, but I’d hate for you to accidentally scratch up your surface!

Another note about this recipe: Sometimes when I’m feeling lazy, I skip the whole soap part of this homemade soft scrub. For many cleaning jobs, a little baking soda and a damp rag will give you the scrubbiness you need. Just make sure you do a test area first to make sure this isn’t too abrasive for the surface you’re cleaning! I’ve never had a problem, but I haven’t tested these on every possible surface, only the ones in my house.

  • water, as needed
  • mason jar
  • our Soft Scrub printable label, optional
  • double-sided tape, optional
  • packing tape, optional

Directions

1. Combine the baking soda and liquid castille soap, mixing with a fork until it forms a paste. If it seems a little thick, add water a tablespoon at a time until you have a nice, creamy scrub. Spoon it into your mason jar.

2. If you’re using our printable label, print and cut it out, then wrap it around your mason jar, using the double-sided tape to secure it in place. Cover the label with a piece of packing tape to protect it from moisture damage, and you’re ready to go!
